For students in 4th grade and below, I believe that the focus should not be on structure; rather, beginning writers should learn how to write their ideas down. Creative thought takes little to no effort for these students. I want them to learn how to explain and articulate their ideas, whether it’s for a book report, recording observations, or for an original story. I will be helping these students communicate their ideas with clarity and encourage accurate use of grammar. As a visual and performing artist, I know that sometimes, we find the words we need by drawing or diagramming them first. I want to make sure that writing becomes a fun and fulfilling activity that younger students can already start using to express themselves.
